Živý jazyk je jako cesta vyšlapaná kravami: je to výtvor krav, které ji sledují nebo se od ní odchylují z nějakého jejich vrtochu či potřeby. Dennodenním užívání cestu mění. Kráva není povinna zůstávat na úzké cestě, již pomáhala tvořit sledujíc tvar země, ale setrvává-li na ní, má z toho prospěch, a jestliže by nevěděla, kde cesta je nebo kam vede, mohlo by to pro ni být nevýhodné.

The living language is like a cow-path: it is the creation of the cows themselves, who, having created it, follow it or depart from it according to their whims or their needs. From daily use, the path undergoes change. A cow is under no obligation to stay in the narrow path she helped make, following the contour of the land, but she often profits by staying with it she would be handicapped if she didn’t know where is it was and where it led to.
